Kirkland Residence

This home originally featured a large fireplace dividing the space, and blocking all of the light. By removing the fireplace, the new open floor plan, vaulted ceilings, and  connection to outdoor spaces help create a space that is as functional as it is beautiful.

This family home underwent a transformative renovation to enhance functionality and infuse modern elements while respecting its architectural integrity. The main level, originally segmented and dim, was reimagined to create an open, light-filled living space. The outdated kitchen, once constrained by a dropped ceiling and separated from the living area by a massive two-story fireplace, was completely revitalized.

To achieve a seamless flow and improve connectivity to the outdoor areas, the obstructive fireplace was removed, making way for a formal dining space and a unified floor plan. The living room, previously sunken, was raised to match the rest of the floor, and the kitchen ceiling was vaulted to enhance the sense of openness. The reorientation of the kitchen, living, and dining areas not only maximized space but also fostered a better connection with the outdoors.

In terms of design, the homeowners opted for a blend of classic and contemporary styles. The kitchen now boasts striking dark blue shaker-style cabinets with contrasting white upper cabinets, complemented by modern light fixtures that also extend into the living spaces. The entry staircase was reconstructed to align with the new single-floor layout, featuring custom-designed dark hardwood treads and handrails that echo the new flooring throughout the home.

The renovation resulted in a harmonious blend of functionality and style, perfectly suited to the family's needs and aesthetic preferences, creating a welcoming environment that balances classic elegance with bold, contemporary flair.
