The client, as well as our lead designer, both had experience living in tiny homes and shared an understanding of the value and potential of small and efficient spaces. The design builds on their directives for “white, wood, and smart uses of space,” for an inventive interior that perfectly suits their adventurous lifestyle and modern taste.
The first floor includes one bedroom, a three-quarter bath, a kitchen, and living and dining areas. Dual-use rooms were planned when possible – since the only bathroom on the main floor is both the guest bath and primary bath, the plan included a pocket door off the main living space allowing bathroom access for guests or allowing for the homeowners to close off the entire hall to create a primary suite.
The second floor includes a deck at the top of the staircase along with an office and guest bedroom, a family bathroom, a den/media space, and a children’s play closet. The primary and secondary bedrooms were shifted to share the second floor, allowing for easy access if the latter transitioned into a nursery space.
Furniture was specially selected for the client’s evolving lifestyle.
Emphasis was put on durable design with plenty of display space that looks best when it's lived in. Tactile, natural, and long-wearing materials were integrated to easily accommodate the movement and messes of family life. Dutch doors were included on both the front and back of the home, making the thresholds safe for children and pets alike. Office furniture was selected that could be transitioned into a nursery if needed in the future. Smart built-ins were tucked into many of the rooms, including a custom niche for the client’s favorite espresso maker, crates for their two dogs nestled in the dining room sidebar, and an arched spice niche in the kitchen that recalls one they had previously loved.
