Artists' Studio
This innovative artist studio, nestled in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood, is thoughtfully designed to cater to the dynamic needs of two artists who require extensive space for large-scale projects while maintaining a strong connection to their family life. The challenge was to integrate a functional, expansive workspace within a modest footprint to blend seamlessly into a residential setting. The solution: a two-story structure, where each artist enjoys a dedicated floor, connected by a cleverly designed spiral staircase equipped with a trap door. This feature allows for the easy transport of large canvases and art supplies between levels.
Constructed with a modern aesthetic, the studio incorporates both found and salvaged materials, adding unique character and texture to its clean lines. Expansive windows and sliding doors are strategically placed to flood the space with natural light and facilitate the movement of equipment, ensuring the studio is both inspirational and practical. A covered deck provides a physical and visual link to the main residence, allowing family members to move freely between spaces. This connection ensures the studio supports not just artistic endeavors but also enriches the family’s daily interactions, making it a sanctuary of creativity and a comfortable extension of the home.
