Little remains of the original residence beyond the footprint for this remodel and second story addition. What was previously a main floor with a series of small, dark and closed off spaces was transformed into an open, light-filled floorplan on the main level that encourages interaction and gathering.
The desire for light was a driving factor in many of the design decisions and every opportunity was utilized to open the space up with a modern and clean aesthetic. The shed roof on the new second story allowed for tall, vaulted ceilings throughout with skylights in each space to increase the daylight as well as the ventilation throughout the levels. The entire main level required a full gut in addition to changing the location of the stairwell. The stairwell moved from the back to the center of the home and the entire organization was changes to make more sense for the homeowner’s goals and lifestyle.
