Greenlake Craftsman

Originally one story with an unfinished basement, the goal for this remodel was to create the dream home for a growing family while remaining true to the architectural style of the original. White paint, hardwood floors, neutral tile and stone were used throughout for a clean and timeless foundation of materials for the family to build from while custom built-in shelving, bookcases, banisters, columns and ceiling details keep the home rooted in the Craftsman style.

To better fit the family’s lifestyle, the main level was almost entirely transformed. By raising the first floor two feet, a full 8-foot ceiling height was created in the basement along with new porches added to the front and back of the home. The basement was transformed into a complete mother-in-law unit with a living area, kitchenette, bedroom suite and laundry room. An additional locking door at the staircase allows the possibility of making the unit entirely separate from the main home.

With all bedrooms located on the new second-story addition, there was an opportunity to expand the kitchen and dining sequence and add a new office space and powder room to the main floor. The cabinets extend the total height to take advantage of the higher ceilings and ensure endless future storage capacity. The focal point of the kitchen is a large island for gathering during food preparations, informal eating, or spreading out homework projects from school. More formal dining experiences are held in the dining room, which is connected to the kitchen but feels like its own space due to the four surrounding columns. A box beam ceiling with a chandelier completes the formal dining experience.

A grand staircase with custom Craftsman-style detailing leads to the second floor. At the top, a highlight of the home is a sun-drenched reading nook filled with light from the surrounding windows and skylight. Two bedrooms for children flow down the hallway leading to a bathroom designed for two with space-saving details like a dual faucet trough sink and built-in shelving. At the end of the hallway, the bedroom suite feels luxurious with vaulted ceilings, box beams and chandeliers. To keep the bedroom open and spacious, a walk-in closet was designed to accommodate built-in drawers and features a skylight. The highlight of the suite is the walk-in shower with a skylight that washes the space in light and provides a full view of the sky that turns a shower into an experience.
