Gatewood Home

Originally a 4-bed, 4-bath residence, The Gatewood Home has been dramatically transformed adding a second story and expanding the home's footprint to optimize views and living space. Strategic window placement and extensions in key areas like the kitchen and living room enhance the indoor-outdoor feel, while interior features such as a secret tunnel between children’s rooms and a spa-like primary bath add unique touches to this family-centric home.

Located in West Seattle, this 4-bed, 4-bath residence underwent a complete interior and exterior remodel, including the addition of a second story and expanding the footprint both in the front and rear of the home. The first floor was lifted to enhance the view and the second floor was pushed out beyond the main level to create a covered deck. Windows have been placed strategically throughout the home, especially at the landings at both stairwells that offer lovely views and create light-filled spaces.

The main floor was also extended out the back, past the basement wall, to extend the kitchen and add a living room. In the front, the dining room and office were bumped out, creating a very open and flexible floorplan where the entire family could hang out together. A large walk-in coat closet keeps the front area tidy, and a bold powder room sits at the end of a window-lit hall. House extends over the back deck to create a covered space with built-in ceiling heaters. The large 12’ sliding French doors off the living room create an indoor-outdoor feel.

The upstairs features a primary suite, two children’s bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a laundry room. A decorative tray ceiling in the bedroom adds a touch of personality while the covered deck boasts a water view that can be enjoyed year-round. The primary bath has a double vanity, a large spa-like walk-in shower with a custom niche for products and a makeup area with its own wallpaper. The basement ceiling was raised to create a more open-light-filled basement with a guest room, bathroom, rec room, kids' study area and extra storage. There are a lot of fun opportunities within this family home that are great for children. There is a secret connector tunnel between the two kids’ bedrooms, a crawl space under the basement stairs that is great for reading, and a secret room with window-like access that utilizes the area under the front deck is ideal for a playroom that also keeps toys tucked away.

The exterior was pushed and pulled for both extra space and exterior interest. There are moments in the siding where the details change to break up the otherwise large rectangular area and add visual interest. A standalone garage was added in the back.
