The Lanterman

The Lanterman is a new 70-unit, multi-family residential development in North Queen Anne designed by our Architecture team to meet the need for housing in the neighborhood. Named after a man with a background in the cruise industry, the building features various gathering spaces and with decor by our Interior Design team that features a subtle nod to those things most loved by the late Mr. Lanterman.

In close collaboration with our interior design team, we designed an identity inspired by the alphabet used by the nautical flag system. Through spelling out the building's name and then overlaying each to form a grid, an arrow symbol stood out from the formation, speaking to the directionality of a cruise ship. The arrow was paired with a modern sans-serif typeface to create a full identity system that was then used throughout the building on all wayfinding and signage, both interior and exterior.

The identity system was created as a flexible system that could adapt to various types of usage throughout the building. It can be used with the full name, with just the "L" or with only the arrow itself depending on the most appropriate usage. Below are renderings of the exterior signage and the individual room plaques, showing two completely different uses of the identity system.
