ON THE BOARDS

WINE RETAIL SHOP

This wine shop is moving in to an old Starbucks location in Old Tacoma, and they came to us just in love with the look of Communion Restaurant and Bar. The warm woods, the blue upholstery, the metal ceiling! The design concept began with looking at our own design for Communion for inspiration then evolved into a more retro, Art Deco style direction. See the concept board above.

Retail comes first in the space, but they will also have a pretty eye catching bar for wine tastings and a small seating area off to the side. See the floor plan below:

With the Art Deco theme in place, the back bar shelving turned into an exciting design opportunity. We wanted something that stood out from the walls of shelving, so it is intended to be fairly different. The idea is a built-up wood case that steps down on the sides, and back in depth, with a mirrored back and glass shelves.  Also, to either side of the assembly is either a wall mounted, or ceiling hung, metal shelving system with glass shelves. These could be made with brass tubes to match the foot rails, but create a buffer between the more industrial shelving and the wood structure in the middle. Another idea to further tie elements together could be a cap piece for each shelf that has a similar scalloped shape, or perhaps a starburst shape, in typical art deco fashion, that is designed for signage such as French, Italian, Chardonnay, etc.

The color scheme for the space features dark woods, teals, metal accents in brass, and bringing in some possible burgundy as well.  Below we have two interior design schemes. With the new Art Deco theme, we've named our two schemes appropriately, Gatsby and Swing Time.
