HENRY WALTERS, AIA, NCARB

PARTNER, ARCHITECT

For Henry, design is all about empathy. Growing up in Eagle River, Alaska, Henry was always a “people person” (despite the low population density of his home state). He honed his early approach to visual communication as an art major, but was drawn to architecture’s more structured and collaborative creative process, existing at what he calls, “the nexus of art and science.” Henry pursued a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Idaho, and went on to work at several award-winning firms early in his career. In 2005, Henry started his own Seattle-based design studio, which he merged with Michelle Linden in 2012. Created from the convergence of these two long-time collaborators, Atelier Drome is a firm that understands how important relationships are to good design.

From early programming decisions through final finishes, Henry is an expert at engaging individuals collaboratively in the design process. He works to understand projects through the clients’ perspective, making decisions that maximize not only the practical function of the space, but also its expressive potential. During client meetings, Henry is often found communicating through a combination of conversation and hand-drawing, distilling ideas into design options in real-time. Henry views “design as a filter for dialogue,” and sees these early conversations as integral to projects which positively impact not only the individual client, but also the larger community. He especially thrives on the fast-paced atmosphere of small restaurant and commercial projects, and enjoys helping new business owners actualize their visions starting from scratch. Genuinely invested in the success of his clients and the larger Seattle small business community, Henry has led over 200 small commercial projects in the area.

As a firm leader, Henry is similarly dedicated to building meaningful relationships. He sees learning and sharing knowledge as essential values to cultivate in the Atelier Drome staff, as well as in himself. Known widely for his listening skills and big picture thinking, Henry is a resource for Atelier Drome staff and clients alike. Outside of the office, Henry can be found enjoying his new home on Lummi Island with his wife and their two labradoodles.
