2020 ART CARD

Kelly Rae Cunningham

Artist Bio

My start with painting began with ceramics- slabs of clay, ceramic glazes, and the same tools that I use today to apply, layer, and scrape away paint. My last semester in college I fell in love with mixing colors and the smell of oil paint and turpentine, so I turned from clay to canvas.

I’ve always been a creative person. I have a ceramics degree, created jewelry, travelled West Africa studying dance, and in 2020 completed an interior design program.

I am mostly a self taught painter, and my work is a lot of experimentation and exploration. I have a process driven approach to my
paintings, which means I paint for the experience of painting and to simply experience color. I paint with many different mediums as they lend different qualities to the process: oil for the saturation of color and patience, acrylic for speed, collage and layering for depth, and encaustics (oil and wax) as it is tactile and most like working with clay. My paintings employ layers of color, worked with palette knives and brushes, whimsical use of dot and line, energetic brush strokes,. You’ll see abstraction that combines creative mark-making, and gestural application of Bold colors (and always tiffany blue).

I have been painting, exhibiting and filling walls of homes and buildings for twenty plus years. My work is part of private and corporate collections. All over the US.
